Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
