TikTok Content Creators Fueling Parallel Market for Unlicensed Slimming Drug

A shadow market for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Active Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with numerous of members share comparison photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors promote the drug there before directing customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help patients lose up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Express Concerns

Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering products of unknown origin.

Several experts said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer laws, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Platform Response and Content Removal

According to the social media company, the platform has taken down violative material and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was committed to keeping the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Activities

Research also found communities with up to nine thousand participants marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or administering at home.

Within moments of entering one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Information and Pricing

Within these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to include new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a injector should last, vendors give contradictory answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Measures

A representative for the messaging service said it regularly monitored dangerous material on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“Individuals are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not include what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake injections are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has already encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet approved … may subject patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
