Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
